xTuple, Norfolk, Virginia
President and CEO: xTuple, formerly OpenMFG, provides an open source ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) system for companies of all sizes. I do a little bit of everything, but still try to find time to blog about the industry at The ERP Graveyard Blog.

March 1996-May 2001
LANDMARK COMMUNICATIONS, INC., Norfolk, Virginia
For five years, I held senior management positions with Landmark, a privately-held company with combined revenues in excess of $1 billion. Landmark has interests in newspapers, television, cable programming (including The Weather Channel network), and new software and communications technologies. The company has a small but active New Ventures corporate group, and I incubated, launched, and developed several companies out of that group.
Vice President, Great Bridge, LLC: Helped launch a new company delivering open source software solutions powered by PostgreSQL, the world's most advanced open source database. The Great Bridge open source value proposition focused on lower total cost of ownership, and freedom from software vendor lock-in.
  • Conducted early research into open source software which led to the formation of the company; identified PostgreSQL as the best intersection of product sophistication and market opportunity.
  • Developed technology roadmap for the company, identifying opportunities for product focus and partnering.
  • As company evangelist, worked with both open source projects and partner companies on product integration, co-marketing efforts, mutual support strategies, and investment opportunities. Recruited individual leaders in various technology communities to align with Great Bridge.
  • Led the development of GreatBridge.org - a next-generation open source project hosting site which provides infrastructure support for selected development efforts.
  • Led the initial development of the company knowledgebase (product documentation, manuals, white papers, bug tracking, etc.)
  • Coined the term "hacker relations" - served as primary interface with the development community on product strategy, competitive analysis, and public relations. I was prominently featured in Upside, Computerworld, Fast Company, and many other publications.
Vice President, CarScene.com: Developed and launched specialty automotive vertical e-business. CarScene provided auctions, classifieds, retail catalog sales, and community features for specialty car enthusiasts; it received revenues from listing fees, auction commissions, advertising, and commissions on retail sales of automotive parts. The business was sold to Trader Publishing, a Landmark joint venture with Cox Enterprises which publishes the Auto Trader family of classified magazines.
  • Co-founded the company: drafted business plan, successfully sold Landmark leadership on the concept, and acquired a small online classifieds business to jump-start the business.
  • Created product strategy which started with acquiring a critical mass of rare cars to draw in users, then developing additional commerce, community features and marketing programs to build user loyalty.
  • Directed the development and deployment of custom software (Oracle database on Linux, Cold Fusion on Windows NT) in six weeks' time. The software anticipates business development needs by allowing for seamless co-branded aelopment needs by allowing for seamless co-branded and private-label auction sites with outside partners.
General Manager, centralReservations.com:  Wrote business plan and directed successful startup of an Internet-based transactional business offering real-time lodging reservations on the World Wide Web. The business, a wholly-owned unit of Landmark Communications, exclusively listed thousands of rental properties, and forged strategic alliances with major players in the vacation rental management industry.
  • Developed marketing strategy which emphasized serving professional property management companies as primary customers (rather than consumer end-users of the service).
  • Drafted original technical specifications, and supervised technical staff and consultants through the development and rollout period.
  • Led sales effort which signed exclusive contracts with over 33% of the target rollout market in only two months.
September 1998-Present

I am also a partner in a boutique consultancy which advises small businesses on growth, mergers, and acquisitions.

The firm recently managed the sale of Takeover Stock Report, Inc. (TSR), to Securities Data Publishing, a unit of Thomson Financial Services.  I had a small role in the 1996 planning and formation of TSR, an Internet-based newsletter for risk arbitrageurs and other money managers.

Developed a broad-based strategic plan for Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates, the business arm of the late Peanuts creator.

January 1994-March 1996
THE MORINO INSTITUTE, Reston, Virginia
Helped build a prominent nonprofit organization with former Legent Corp. CEO Mario Morino. I created the Institute's first product, an online directory of "community networks," and also helped develop the forerunner to the Netpreneur program, which supports entrepreneurial activity in the Washington, DC area.
January-December 1993
New Media Consultant

Over the course of a year spent researching the emerging online world, I developed press materials for America Online, Inc., and produced news segments for Maryland Public Television.

May 1991-December 1992
"THE HOTLINE," Falls Church, Virginia

Managing Editor: Directed story assignments, creative development, and execution of a daily, 20-page electronic briefing on American politics. Ensured the smooth operation of a 24-hour news cycle, and wrote lead stories on national political/campaign news.

June-November 1992
